5 Reasons to Bring Children to an Exhibition at Bozar

Visiting an exhibition at Bozar with children can be a truly enjoyable and enriching experience. Here are five tips for getting the most out of your visit and feeding your little one’s imagination.

1.    Let children lead the way

Bozar’s exhibition spaces are fascinating places that really boost the imagination. Set off exploring at your own pace and let the children guide you to the works that appeal to them. Take time to stop and look at the pieces that evoke a particular emotion in them, or pique their interest, even if they are not the ones you would choose. Don’t worry if you miss out some of the works; there are always plenty of reasons to come back to Bozar.

2.    Interact with the works

Think of your visit as an interactive adventure. Anything is possible! For example: ask the children to look for things they recognise in the works, everyday objects or elements from nature. Once they’ve done that, encourage them to draw or note down the items they identified in a sketchbook. This activity will stimulate their observation and creativity.

Ask the children:

How do you feel when you look at this work? Does it conjure up a particular atmosphere, emotion or smell?
Does this work remind you of anything?

 3.    Change your perspective

Exhibitions are often designed so that works of art can be viewed at adult height. Adopt an alternative approach and invite the children to look at the works from different angles. You can also position yourself at their height or step back to get a better view. Talk to them about the changes in perception resulting from these different angles.

4.    Invent stories

Choose a work of art and invent a story about it together. Imagine how this work would appear in different contexts of your everyday life or in fantasy situations. This activity encourages creativity and allows their imagination to run wild with the artworks. A simpler alternative is to have fun guessing (and therefore inventing) the title of certain works.

5.    Pretend to be budding reporters!

To round off your visit, get the children to act as budding journalists. Ask them to produce a news report about the exhibition. By recording themselves using a telephone, for example, they can describe where they are, what they have seen, interview a fictitious visitor and share their impressions. It’s a great way to recap the visit in a fun, interactive way.

Last bit of advice...

  •  Please respect the works: remember that works of art are precious. Avoid touching any objects and running around the rooms.
  • Enjoy the moment: your visit should be a moment of pleasure and discovery for the whole family. Have fun and let yourself be carried away by the magic of art.
  • A guide for children is sometimes available for all our major exhibitions. Feel free to request one at the reception. For example, discover here the kid's guide to the exhibition Hans/Jean Arp & Sophie Taeuber-Arp. Friends, Lovers, Partners.

We hope these tips enrich your visit to Bozar and that you leave with some wonderful memories. To stay up to date about forthcoming exhibitions and events, sign up for our newsletter or visit our website.
